Day 4 | Chang'an on the Wall · Stone Tablet Rubbing at the Forest of Steles
Morning: Tang City Wall Hanguang Gate Ruins Museum & City Wall Cycling. Built during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, this military defense system stretches 13.74 kilometers and is the most well-preserved ancient city wall in China. It guarded Chang'an, the starting point of the Silk Road, for over 600 years. Its square layout embodies the Confucian concept of "uprightness and order," and the inscriptions on the city bricks record the history of renovations through the dynasties, making it a veritable "three-dimensional history textbook."
Afternoon: Shuyuanmen Street + Forest of Steles Museum (Stone Tablet Rubbing Making). Shuyuanmen Street gets its name from the Guanzhong Academy of the Ming Dynasty. This 500-meter-long bluestone street has been a center of culture and scholarship since the Tang and Song dynasties. It is home to historical buildings such as Yu Youren's Former Residence and Baoqing Temple Pagoda. There are 87 shops along the street specializing in stationery, rubbings of stone inscriptions, earning it the reputation of an "open-air calligraphy museum."
Xi'an Forest of Steles Museum is the top among China's four major forest of steles and is known as the "Palace of Calligraphy Art." It houses a large number of precious stone inscriptions, epitaphs, and stone carvings, where you can also appreciate the structural beauty of Chinese characters.
